How to play
Type a letter into a blank. In most ciphers a symbol always stands for the same letter, so every blank under the same symbol fills in too. Check marks letters that aren't right yet, without any penalty, and Hint fills in one letter for you. When the message is complete it solves itself.
Stuck? Every puzzle links to the site's own decoder for that cipher, and using it is fair. Show the answer ends the puzzle without counting it as solved.
The week
| Day | Level | Ciphers |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Warm-up | A1Z26, Atbash or Morse, with the key |
| Tuesday | Easy | Polybius square, tap code or Bacon's cipher, with the key |
| Wednesday | Medium | Caesar shift with the shift given, pigpen with the key, or a keyword alphabet |
| Thursday | Medium-hard | Caesar with the shift hidden, or a keyword alphabet |
| Friday | Hard | Affine cipher, or a keyword you have to guess from a riddle |
| Saturday | Harder | Vigenère, with a riddle for the key |
| Sunday | Hardest | A cryptogram, with one or two letters given |
Streaks, sharing and the archive
Solve the day's puzzle on the day to build a streak. It's kept on this device only: there's no account and nothing to sign up for. Copy result gives a line to share that shows how you did and nothing about the answer.
Every past puzzle is in the archive, free. Old puzzles count as solved, but not towards your streak.
Each message is a proverb or a line from a book old enough to be in the public domain, credited when you solve it.
Questions
When does the new puzzle appear?
At midnight where you are. Your device's date decides which puzzle is today's.
Is my streak saved?
On this device and browser. Clearing your browser's data for the site resets it.
Can I use the decoders?
Yes. Every puzzle links to the matching decoder. Working out the key is part of the fun on the harder days.
What is counted?
An anonymous count of how many puzzles are solved, so we can see if people come back. Nothing you type, and no answer or time, is sent anywhere.
