Using the calculator

Type a number and the calculator shows what each digit is worth, puts it into a place value chart, and writes it in expanded form: 4582.37 is 4000 + 500 + 80 + 2 + 0.3 + 0.07. Show as switches to a list of every digit's value, or to the number in words.
Numbers can be up to 15 digits long with up to 6 decimal places, and commas are fine. Put one on each line to do several at once. The printable chart has blank rows for writing numbers in by hand.
How place value works
A digit's value depends on where it sits. In 555, each 5 is worth something different: the first 500, the second 50, the last 5. Every place is worth ten times the place to its right, which is why a 0 matters in 305: it holds the tens place empty so the 3 stays in the hundreds.
The same rule carries on past the decimal point, with each place worth a tenth of the one before. The first place after the point is tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths. In 0.37 the 3 is worth three tenths and the 7 seven hundredths.
Big numbers in words
To say a big number, split it into groups of three from the right, the way commas do: 4,582,037. Each group is read as its own number with its name after it, four million, five hundred and eighty-two thousand and thirty-seven.
British and American English differ on one word. British English puts and before the last part, one hundred and five, while American usage often leaves it out, one hundred five. Show as has both.
