Show the steps
  1. Tuesday 12 January 1982: day 12 = XII, month 1 (January) = I, year 1982 = MCMLXXXII.
  2. The year breaks down as 1000 = M, 900 = CM, 80 = LXXX, 2 = II.
  3. Roman numerals have no zero, so dates are written without leading zeros: 01 is simply I.

Using the converter

Type the date in any common form, such as 12 January 1982, 1982-01-12 or 12/01/1982, and the Roman version appears. The rows below give it day first, month first, year first and the year alone, so you can copy whichever you want. Date order tells the converter how to read a date written with slashes, and sets which version comes out on top. Separator picks dots, middle dots, hyphens, slashes or spaces.

Swap the boxes to read a Roman date back, such as one on an old document or someone else's tattoo.

Day first or month first?

Write it the way the person it's for reads dates. In the UK, Ireland, Australia and most of Europe the day comes first, so 12 January 1982 is XII.I.MCMLXXXII. In the US the month comes first, I.XII.MCMLXXXII. With a day of 12 or less the two look equally plausible, which matters for something permanent: check with the person before it's engraved or inked.

How the year is built

Each part of the year becomes its own numerals, largest first. 1982 is 1000 + 900 + 80 + 2, or M + CM + LXXX + II, so MCMLXXXII. 2026 is MM + XX + VI, MMXXVI. Roman numerals have no zero, so a day like 05 is simply V, and the years 2000 to 2009 are MM followed by the units: 2008 is MMVIII.

The Roman numeral converter has the full chart and the rules for subtractive pairs like CM and XC.

Checking before it's permanent

Read the result back with the swap button: the date that comes out should be the one you meant. Long years like MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888) are easy to mistype when copying by hand, so copy and paste the result rather than retyping it.
