Today's day number
The box starts on today, worked out from your device's clock, so the answer is right wherever you are. Day of the year gives today's number out of 365, or 366 in a leap year, and how many days are left. Below it are today's Julian dates in each format people use.
Type any other date, like `25 December 2026`, to get its day number instead, or a number like `26274` to turn it back into a date with the Julian date converter.
How the days are counted
1 January is day 1 and 31 December is day 365, or 366 in a leap year. Leap years add 29 February as day 60, which pushes every later date one day further on: 1 March is day 60 in an ordinary year and day 61 in a leap year.
A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, unless it divides by 100 and not by 400. 2024 and 2028 are leap years; 2026 isn't. 1900 wasn't, and 2000 was.
Where the day number turns up
Food and drink makers often print the production date as a day number, the year and then three digits: 26274 for 1 October 2026. A calendar marked with day numbers is often called a Julian calendar, though it has nothing to do with Julius Caesar's.
Astronomers' Julian Day is a different count again, running from 4713 BC; today's is in the rows above. The Julian date converter explains every format.
