Alphabetizer

Paste a list with one item per line and it's sorted as you type. Order picks A to Z, Z to A, shortest or longest first, the list reversed, or a shuffle. Length ties are broken alphabetically, so the result is the same every time.

For a comma-separated list, set List is to Comma-separated and it comes back the same way. Duplicates stay unless you choose to remove them, and removal treats Apple and apple as the same item.

The, a, an sorts titles the way a library does, with The Zombies under Z. It only looks at the first word, so Bathe Me stays under B.

A computer's simplest sort compares code points, the numbers behind each character. Z is U+005A and a is U+0061, so every capital lands before every lowercase letter and Zebra comes before apple. É is U+00C9, after all of them, so Émile ends up past Zebra.

Numbers have the same problem. Compared character by character, item10 comes before item2, because 1 is less than 2.

This tool sorts with the browser's own collation rules, which put É beside E and read the numbers in item10 as ten. When we tried five popular alphabetizers in September 2026, two put Émile after Zebra, and one returned Apple twice when given apple and Apple, quietly losing an item.

To turn the sorted column into one comma-separated line, for a spreadsheet or an SQL query, use the comma separator. If your list arrived as one long paragraph, remove line breaks works the other way round.
