Using the generator
Type your text and the wide version appears as you type, ready to copy. The spaced style also puts a gap between every letter, the look that went with vaporwave album covers. To turn wide text back into ordinary letters, swap the direction and paste it in.
Where the wide letters come from
They aren't a font. Unicode has a block of fullwidth forms, a second copy of the ASCII letters, digits and punctuation, each as wide as a Chinese or Japanese character. It's there so that older East Asian encodings, which had both narrow and wide versions, convert to Unicode without losing anything. Each sits exactly 65,248 places above its ordinary twin, from U+FF01 for ! to U+FF5E for ~, and a space becomes U+3000 IDEOGRAPHIC SPACE, which is just as wide.
Because they're real characters, they survive copy and paste into Instagram, TikTok, Discord, X and anywhere else that takes plain text. Letters with accents have no wide form, so they're left as they are.
Vaporwave and the wide look
Vaporwave is an internet music style and look that emerged in the early 2010s, reworking dance music from the 1980s and early 1990s. Its name is often written AESTHETICS in fullwidth characters, and that wide lettering, often beside Japanese text, became shorthand for the whole style.
Before you use it everywhere
Screen readers may spell wide text out letter by letter, or name each character, so keep it for decoration and leave anything people need to read in plain letters. Search won't always match wide words to the ordinary ones either.
Questions
Is vaporwave text the same as aesthetic text?
Often, yes. Wide, spaced-out letters are what many people mean by aesthetic text, though the name gets used for other fancy styles too.
Why are some characters not wide?
Only the 94 printable ASCII characters and the space have fullwidth forms. Accented letters and emoji stay as they are.
Can I turn wide text back to normal?
Yes. Swap the direction and paste it in, and the fullwidth letters and spaces become ordinary ones, spaced style included.
