Underline text generator

Type your text and the underlined version appears as you go, ready to copy. Pick the line under Line. Underneath gives a single line, and there are double, wavy and dotted lines too. To take an underline off, swap the direction and paste the underlined text in.

Most apps that hold plain text, like a bio, a username or a comment box, can't underline anything. This works around that with a combining character, a Unicode mark that sits on the letter before it instead of taking a space of its own. The single underline is U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE, and one goes after every letter and space, so the line runs on across the gaps.

The double line is U+0333 COMBINING DOUBLE LOW LINE, the wavy one U+0330 COMBINING TILDE BELOW and the dotted one U+0324 COMBINING DIAERESIS BELOW. They're ordinary text, so they survive copy and paste into messages and posts.

How the marks are drawn is up to the font and app showing them. Most draw a steady line, but some leave small gaps between letters, and a few place it slightly too low or too high. Letters that drop below the line, like g, p and y, can run into it.

Screen readers may read each mark aloud, or skip the letters, so keep underlined text short and leave anything important plain. Search won't match underlined words either, since every letter is followed by an extra character.
