Using the typewriter generator
Type or paste your text and the monospace version appears as you type. Copy it into a bio, a caption or a username field that offers no font choice.
Swap the boxes to turn typewriter text back into ordinary letters. The Style setting switches to the other styles in the same family, such as bold or cursive.
Why typewriter letters are all one width
A manual typewriter moved its carriage along by the same step after every keystroke. The step was fixed, so an i had to take up as much room as an m. Pica machines fitted 10 characters to the inch and elite machines fitted 12.
The most familiar typewriter face is Courier, drawn by Howard "Bud" Kettler for IBM in the mid-1950s. IBM never trademarked the name, so it's now free for anyone to use. The US State Department kept Courier New as its standard typeface until January 2004, when it moved to Times New Roman.
Where these letters come from
These aren't a font. They're characters from Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, so they look the same wherever they're pasted. The capitals run from U+1D670 to U+1D689, the small letters from U+1D68A to U+1D6A3, and the digits from U+1D7F6 to U+1D7FF.
Unlike the italic and cursive runs, the monospace run has no gaps, so every letter and digit converts. Punctuation and spaces stay as they are.
When to use real code formatting instead
Discord, Slack, Reddit and GitHub already have a monospace style: put the text between backticks. That keeps the real letters, so a screen reader reads them and a search finds them.
Use this page where there's no such option, such as an Instagram bio or a profile name. A screen reader may spell these characters out one by one, so keep them to a short line.
Questions
Is this the Courier font?
No. It's a set of Unicode characters, and each device draws them in its own monospace face. On many phones that looks close to Courier, but the exact shape varies.
Does it work for numbers?
Yes. Monospace is one of the few styles in the block with its own digits, so 0 to 9 convert too.
Can I convert typewriter text back to normal?
Yes. Swap the boxes and each character maps back to its plain letter or digit.
