Christmas word search: answer key
Making a sheet
Pick a word list to start from: three for different ages, one for the Nativity and one for winter. Every word in the box can be changed, so swap in the names of the children in a class, the family at the table or the people in the office. Then choose the grid size and which ways the words run, and press Print. Each sheet prints with its own answer key on a second page.
Sheet number is the seed. The same words, settings and number always give the same grid, so you can print the same puzzle again next year, or give a whole class one sheet and check them all against a single key. Press New grid for a different arrangement of the same words.
Choosing the level

Younger children do best with a small grid and words that only run across and down: a 10 × 10 grid with a dozen three- and four-letter words is plenty for ages 5 to 7. From about 8, add the diagonals and a bigger grid. Words that run backwards, and up as well as down, make the hardest puzzles, good for teenagers and for adults who want a proper search with their mince pie.
Longer words are easier to spot than short ones, oddly, because they cross more of the grid. If a list is too easy, add a few short words; if it's too hard, use a smaller grid with fewer words. A word too long for the grid is left out, and the page says which.
How the grid is made
Words go in longest first, since they have the fewest places to fit, and each takes a random spot that doesn't clash with letters already there. Where two words can share a letter they sometimes do, so the grid knits together like a printed puzzle book. The gaps are then filled with random letters.
Random letters can spell a short word by accident, which would give a puzzle two STARs and an answer key that only marks one. So every word is checked after the fill, and the filler is rerolled until each word appears exactly once. Spaces and punctuation are dropped inside the grid, so CANDY CANE is hidden as CANDYCANE, while the list underneath keeps it as typed.
Questions
Is it free to print for a class?
Yes. Print as many as you like for a classroom, a party or a church group. The QR code in the corner leads back here, and you can switch it off.
Can I put in my own words?
Yes, up to 30. Type them one per line. Accents are dropped in the grid, so NOËL is hidden as NOEL.
Does it work on a phone?
The preview and the settings do, and phones can print to a nearby printer or save the sheet as a PDF from the print menu.
Can I make one that isn't about Christmas?
Yes. The Winter list is there already, and any words you type work: spelling words, a topic in class, or a birthday.
