Using the quiz
Which chooses the numbers. Start with the seven letters, then 1 to 20, which covers every pattern up to XX. The subtractive pairs are the six that trip people up. Years 2000 to 2030 is the set you meet on film credits and foundation stones.
Number → numeral asks for 14 and wants XIV. Numeral → number turns it round. Tick Type the answer and the card is checked for you; capitals or small letters both count, and 1,000 is the same as 1000.
Cards that you miss come back three cards later and are listed at the end.
The rules in one place
I is 1, V 5, X 10, L 50, C 100, D 500 and M 1000. Write the largest first and add them up.
Six pairs subtract instead: IV 4, IX 9, XL 40, XC 90, CD 400 and CM 900. Only I, X and C go in front, and only of the next two letters up. So 99 is XCIX, never IC, and 49 is XLIX.
No letter repeats more than three times, so the standard system stops at MMMCMXCIX, 3999. Every answer here comes from the same code as the Roman numeral converter, so the quiz and the converter can't disagree.
Questions
Is IIII accepted for 4?
No. Some clock faces use IIII, but the standard form is IV, and that's the answer the cards want.
Can I print the cards?
Yes. Print them double-sided, flipping on the long edge, and each answer lands behind its question. Fold prints the front and back side by side for a single-sided printer.
Can I practise bigger numbers?
Choose 1000 to 3000, in 500s, or Years 2000 to 2030. The converter handles any number up to 3999 if you want to check another.
