Using the cards

Handshape → letter shows a hand and asks which letter it spells. Tick Type the answer and type the letter to be marked. Letter → handshape shows the letter; make the shape with your own right hand, then turn the card to check.

Which picks A to Z, a half of it, or the numbers 0 to 9. Open Pick letters one by one to drill a few together. M, N, S and T are a good set, since all four are a closed fist and only the thumb differs.

The page loads all 36 drawings, in the same order, every time it opens. A card never asks for its own picture, so nothing about which cards you're practising reaches our server.

Reading the hands

The drawings are right hands with the palm towards you, the way you'd see someone else spelling. They're the same public domain set as the fingerspelling chart, drawn by wpclipart.com.

J and Z carry arrows because they move. J is the I handshape drawing a J in the air, and Z is an index finger tracing the letter.

The numbers are drawn palm out, the way digits are signed in a phone number or a number of two or more digits. A lone 1 to 5 is usually signed palm back.

Spelling isn't signing

Fingerspelling is the part of American Sign Language used for names, brands and words quoted from English. ASL itself has its own grammar, and most of it is signs, movement and the face rather than letters. These cards teach the handshapes. For the language, Lifeprint is a free course, and a class with Deaf teachers will get you further.

Questions

Can I print the flash cards?

Yes. Double-sided puts the letter behind each hand, lined up when you flip on the long edge. Fold prints the hand and the letter side by side for a one-sided printer.

Is this British Sign Language?

No. This is the American manual alphabet. British Sign Language uses a two-handed alphabet that shares almost nothing with it.

Why can't I type the answer on Letter → handshape?

The answer is a drawing, so there's nothing to type. Make the shape, then turn the card and mark yourself right or wrong.

Is my progress saved?

In this browser, if storage is allowed. Nothing is sent anywhere.
