Using the Easter generator

Type a name or a message and copy the result. Letters switches between plain, cursive, bold cursive and bubble letters. Symbols go puts the symbols either side of the line, three each side, between words or between every letter. Symbol picks which: a chick, a bunny, an egg, a tulip, a blossom, a florette, a cross, or the mix, which takes a chick, a tulip, an egg and a bunny in turn.

The letters are real Unicode characters, not an image, so they paste into a card, a caption, a bio or a message and keep their shape. Swap the boxes to turn Easter text back into plain letters.

Text symbols and emoji

The florettes โœฟ โ€ โ and the cross โœ are ordinary text characters from Unicode's first versions. They take the colour of the text around them. The chicks, bunnies, eggs and flowers are emoji, drawn in colour by each phone or computer in its own style.

The newest one here is the nest with eggs ๐Ÿชบ, from Unicode 14.0, released on 14 September 2021. A device that hasn't caught up shows it as an empty box. The egg ๐Ÿฅš and the butterfly ๐Ÿฆ‹ came in 9.0, the basket ๐Ÿงบ in 11.0, and the rest in 6.0.

The cross is a special case. On its own, โœ shows as plain text in most apps. Choose cross in the generator and it adds an invisible selector, U+FE0F, after it, which asks for the emoji drawing โœ๏ธ instead.

Egg hunt clues in code

Write each clue in a code and hide it with an egg, so finding one egg leads to the next. Pigpen is easy to paint on a shell, and children can decode it with the key in front of them. Numbers are easier still: A1Z26 turns EGG into 5-7-7.

For older hunters, print a Caesar cipher wheel and give them the shift, or tap the last clue out in Morse code. The escape room puzzle maker turns a whole set of clues into one printable game.

When is Easter?

In 2027, Easter Sunday is on 28 March in the Western churches and on 2 May in the Orthodox churches. In 2028 both fall on the same day, 16 April.

The date moves because it follows the moon. Easter is the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the church's full moon on or after 21 March. That puts Western Easter somewhere between 22 March and 25 April. Orthodox churches work it out on the older Julian calendar, so their Easter is often later.

Where the Easter bunny comes from

The Easter bunny began as a hare, the Osterhase, among German Lutherans. In the late 1600s a German physician, Georg Franck von Franckenau, wrote about it in De ovis paschalibus, "About Easter eggs". In the story, the hare judged whether children had been good and brought coloured eggs to those who had.

German immigrants took the hare to Pennsylvania in the 18th century. Their children made nests in their caps and bonnets for it to leave eggs in. Chocolate eggs came later: in 1725 the widow Giambone started making them in Turin.

Questions

How do I get an Easter font on Instagram or TikTok?

Type your text above, choose cursive, bold cursive or bubble letters, and copy the result into your bio or caption. The letters are Unicode characters, so no font needs installing.

How do I type an Easter emoji?

Copy one from the chart above. The emoji keyboard on a phone or computer has them too, under animals, food and nature.

Why does the nest show as a box?

The phone or computer doesn't have that emoji yet. The nest with eggs arrived in Unicode 14.0 in 2021, and older devices don't show it.

When is Easter 2027?

Sunday 28 March 2027 in the Western churches, and Sunday 2 May 2027 in the Orthodox churches.
