Making a Christmas sheet

Pick addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, then the level: facts for younger children, or bigger numbers set out in columns. The page under the settings is the sheet as it will print, with a garland and holly across the top and trees and presents along the bottom, all drawn in outline so children can colour them in when they finish. The answer key prints on a second page.

Every sheet has a number. The same number and settings print the same questions again, so a colleague can print your sheet, or you can print it again next December. Nothing you set up leaves your browser.

Decode a Christmas message

The decode sheet has one question for each different letter in a message such as MERRY CHRISTMAS or LET IT SNOW. Each answer is in the code table with a letter under it. Children write that letter in every box marked with the question's number, and the message spells itself out as they go.

No two questions share an answer, so every lookup has one letter. The table also holds a few answers that aren't on the sheet, with letters that aren't in the message, so a wrong answer lands on a letter that doesn't fit or on no letter at all, and a child can see something is wrong before you mark it. Choose the message, or leave it to the sheet number. Switch Sheet to Practice for a plain sheet of 6 to 40 questions.

Which level to pick

Facts are addition and subtraction within 20 and divisions that undo the times tables, like 42 ÷ 6. The US Common Core expects fluent adding and subtracting within 20 in grade 2 (2.OA.B.2), and England's National Curriculum asks for addition and subtraction facts to 20 in Year 2.

Christmas multiplication worksheets use the tables you tick, up to 10 or 12, or two- to four-digit numbers set out for long multiplication. Common Core asks for every product of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 3 (3.OA.C.7), and England for the tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4.

Two digits and more give column addition that always carries and subtraction that always borrows, and long division by a one- or two-digit number. For fractions, binary, the area model or the lattice method, use the full maths worksheet generator.

Ideas for the last week of term

Give each table a different message on the same topic and let them compare when they finish. Or print one decode sheet for the whole class, and the first to read out the message picks the next carol.

At home, a decode sheet makes a good clue for a present: the message tells them where it is hidden. The Christmas escape room has five more clues in codes, and Christmas bingo cards finish off the afternoon.

Questions

Are these Christmas math worksheets free?

Yes. Print and copy them for your class, your club or your own children as often as you like.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, on a second page, with the decoded message at the bottom. Untick it to print only the sheet.

Will the border use a lot of ink?

No. The garland, holly, trees and presents are drawn as black outlines on white, so they print cleanly in black and white and leave something to colour in.

Why does the decode sheet say there are too few answers?

Every letter needs its own answer. With only one or two times tables ticked there aren't enough different products for a longer message, so tick more tables or pick a shorter message.
