How to read the chart

Find the number you divide by down the left. Go along its row to the number you're dividing. The answer is at the top of that column. So for 56 ÷ 7, go along the 7 row to 56 and look up. The column is headed 8.

Point at a number, or tap it on a phone, and its row and column light up. The sum is written out above the chart.

Fact lists sets the same facts out as one short list for each divisor. Tick the blank answers box and every answer becomes a line to fill in, which makes a quick practice sheet. Print shows whichever view is on screen. The box at the top writes out any single division table, for 7 or for 2-5 at once.

Division is times backwards

Every division fact is a multiplication fact turned round. If 8 × 7 = 56, then 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7. That's why this chart is the multiplication chart with the answers moved to the top.

US schools teach it this way on purpose. The Common Core asks grade 3 pupils to see division as a missing-factor problem. Its own example finds 32 ÷ 8 by asking what makes 32 when multiplied by 8.

So a child who knows their tables already knows their division facts. What's left is practice at reading them the other way, starting from the big number in the middle of the grid and working out to the edge.

Patterns worth spotting

Each row holds the multiples of its divisor, so every number in the 5 row ends in 0 or 5. The same number turns up in several rows. 24 appears in the 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 rows, because it divides by all of them. A number found only in the 1 row and its own row, like 13, is prime.

Dividing a number by itself always gives 1. Those facts sit in the first column. Dividing by 1 changes nothing, and that's the whole top row.

In the classroom

Ages 7 and up, about 10 minutes. In England, pupils start on division facts with the 2, 5 and 10 tables in year 2, and by year 4 the national curriculum expects them to recall every division fact up to 12 × 12 without working it out. Print the fact lists with blank answers. Start with one table.

Take it further: give a number like 36 and ask for every way to divide it exactly, then find them all on the chart.

Questions

How do I print a division chart?

Choose the size and the view, chart or fact lists, then press Print. The fact lists can be printed with blank answers for practice.

Why is there no 0 row?

You can't divide by 0. No number times 0 makes 5, say, so 5 ÷ 0 has no answer. 0 ÷ 5 is fine, though. It's 0.

What about numbers that don't divide exactly?

The chart only holds exact answers. For a remainder, like 58 ÷ 7, find the nearest number below it in the 7 row, which is 56. That gives 8, with 2 left over. The long division calculator works through bigger sums.

Is this the same as a multiplication chart?

The numbers are the same. The difference is how you read it. On a division chart you start inside the grid and read the answer off the edge.
